Timeline

The following are significant dates in the story of Frank Matsura in Japan and the U.S.

1901

  Sakae is issued a passport and shortly after leaves for the U.S. from Yokohama Harbor.   

1902

  Sakae spends time in Seattle, Washington and his earliest known photos date from this time. His photographs also show that he spends time in Sitka, Valdez and Cordova, Alaska.  

1903

  Sakae, who is now going by the name Frank S. Matsura, travels to Conconully, Washington in Okanogan County where he takes a job as a handyman at the Elliot Hotel.  

1904

  Frank becomes known as a photographer with photos published in local newspapers.
